Ask for ANI scheme

The government has launched the Ask for ANI (Action Needed Immediately) codeword scheme to enable victims of domestic abuse to access immediate help from the police, or other support services, from the safety of their local pharmacy.

Overview

From the 14th January 2021, victims of domestic abuse will be able to access much needed support from thousands of pharmacies across the UK, backed by the government.

The Ask for ANI scheme allows those at risk or suffering from abuse to discreetly signal that they need help and access support. By asking for ANI, a trained pharmacy worker will offer a private space where they can understand if the victim needs to speak to the police or would like help to access support services such as a national or local domestic abuse helplines.

Building on the successful Home Office #YouAreNotAlone campaign, this scheme is another way for the government to raise awareness of the vital support available through domestic abuse charities and other partners including the police.

Why introduce the scheme in pharmacies?

Most pharmacies will have consultation rooms available and staff have received training on safeguarding. For many victims affected by domestic abuse, seeking medical assistance through a pharmacy is often allowed. Pharmacies across the country are already responding to safeguarding issues and this scheme provides a clear process to follow, and additional training and guidance to support them to deliver this assistance even more effectively.
